English Language Arts

Mathematics

The Phillipsburg Elementary Schools (ECLC, PPS, PES) utilize multiple resources in grades K-5 to create a comprehensive program. Our standards-based curriculum focuses on problem-solving, computation, and fluency skills.  The majority of our math instructional time is spent in small groups and follows the CPA progression. Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract. The areas of focus address the following Domains: Counting and Cardinality (grade K), Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Number and Operations in Base Ten, Number and Operations in Fractions (grades 3-5), Geometry, Measurement and Data, and the Mathematical Practices are incorporated in all Domains.

Science

In order to ensure college and career readiness, the Phillipsburg Elementary Schools (ECLC, PPS, PES) utilize a phenomena-based curriculum model in all K-5 classrooms. The science curriculum incorporates high interest topics infused with literacy. The curriculum embeds scientific and engineering practices in physical, life, and earth sciences as noted in the NJSLS for Science.  Lessons are written to reflect the GRC model, Gather-Research-Communicate.  Our students have access to a variety of resources including Mystery Science, Picture Perfect Science, and Reading A to Z.  STEM classes are offered weekly and support the engineering standards through hands-on activities. Some of these activities include flying drones, Code & Go Robot Mice, Snap Circuits, and Virtual Reality Systems.  

Social Studies

The New Jersey Student Learning Standards drive the Social Studies instruction for the Phillipsburg Elementary Schools (ECLC, PPS, PES), which focus on a deep understanding of concepts and development of skills. Students are encouraged to think critically and systematically about a variety of issues in order to become productive, informed members of local, state, and global communities.
