Phillipsburg Middle School Social Studies Department

The Social Studies Department at Phillipsburg Middle School aims to develop students' appreciation for the study of World and United States History. Through the study of the past, students will be able to continue to develop into active global citizens. Students will begin with the study of ancient civilizations through exploration followed by the colonization of the United States up to the Civil War. 
6th Grade Social Studies
This course will trace human migrations through Eurasia and Africa and will investigate how the early civilizations were established. The course will end with an examination of the classical civilizations of Greece, India, China, and Rome. The teacher will facilitate this study through cooperative learning, library research, the reinforcement of study skills, and an appreciation for differences and similarities between themselves and the people of other cultures. Students are encouraged to actively participate in the class.
 
 
 
7th Grade Social Studies
Upon the fall of Rome, the course will focus on the Western and non-Western civilizations that developed during the Middle Ages and Renaissance.  European expansion and colonization will also be explored.  The teacher will facilitate this study through cooperative learning, library research for projects, the reinforcement of study skills, and an appreciation for differences and similarities between themselves and the people of other cultures.  Students are encouraged to actively participate in the class.
 
 
 
8th Grade Social Studies
This course will begin with the study of early America through the Colonial period. Special emphasis will be given to the study of American government, civics, and geography. This course will conclude with an overview of the American Civil War.  Students will focus on study skills, the development of projects, and library research. Students are encouraged to actively participate in the class.
